Internal condom (formerly called "female condom")

Woman holding up a female condom

You can buy female condoms, like the one in this photo, at most drugstores, or at any of our sexual health clinics.

The internal condom is a polyurethane sheath that covers the walls of the vagina or anus during penetration, to prevent pregnancy and/or infections.

You can buy receptive condoms at our sexual health clinics and most drug stores.

Some people enjoy being in control of both pregnancy and/or infection protection even as the receiver of penetrative sex. It can also be used by people who are allergic to latex condoms.

How to use a internal condom

The internal condom is inserted in the vagina or anus before sex and acts like a baggie to collect semen. It is used to protect against infections and to prevent pregnancy and has a 5% failure rate.

The internal condom can be difficult to insert and use at first, but it gets easier with practise.
